Changing default font in Outlook versus Increasing Zoom

A common suggestion I have come across while reading discussions about Zoom settings not being saved in Outlook is to change incoming emails to plain text and then increase the font size of the plain text for better readability.

I want to point out one main drawback of doing this.  You will lose all the formatting the sender might have added to the email such as highlighting important details of the email, bold text, underlining, bullet points etc. With Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2010, Microsoft switched to using MS Word for reading and editing emails. This is to add the power of Word's rich formatting to emails.  By enabling plain text option you are essentially giving up this power.

The other option to improve readability is to increase the default zoom in Outlook "Read Email" window. The problem with this option is that the Outlook zoom settings are not saved permanently.  The zoom always resets to 100%.
